Chapter Thirty

Unknowingly she walked forward.

As if she didn’t know that her future would change in an instant.

Savior watched, anticipating, excited, knowing the plan was moving ahead in a timely manner. Patience was the guide word. Patience now for what must be done, and patience in the days ahead—until it was time for the final act of vengeance.

Vengeance is mine saith the Lord.

And mine, Savior thought, scrutinizing the woman. She was a little older than the others but still slender and attractive. Her small frame made her easy to overpower, to become the next one to die.

It was past midnight and the riverfront street was deserted of people, cars, and mass transportation vehicles. Even the boat traffic on the Hudson had slowed to a trickle. The city never slept, but the people did.

A mist of rain cast a silvery sheen over the darkest part of the night, and Savior wondered what had brought the woman out into such a dangerous area of the city.

Stupidity. She was probably a fuckin’ prostitute.

She deserves to die.

Dying for the cause would be her salvation.

Savior moved away from the shelter of the doorway to follow the woman, silently, ever so carefully, closing in on her. At first she was unaware that anyone was behind her. Then something, a muffled footstep, a sense of another presence, or just plain instinct alerted her to danger, and she glanced over her shoulder. Instant fear registered on her face that was illuminated by a nearby streetlight. She started to run.

She was easy. It only took a spurt of speed to allow Savior to overtake her, reach around her neck, and place the chloroform-soaked rag over her nose and mouth. Her struggling stopped in seconds, her scream silenced before it escaped her throat. She went limp and would have fallen, but Savior held her upright, then dragged her to the waiting van parked on the next block.

Within minutes she lay in the back, unconscious, Savior driving along the quiet streets toward the warehouse in the industrial section of the city. The dungeon awaited the latest sacrifice.

Savior would explain to the woman that she was special, that she had a higher calling than the streets. Maybe she would understand, so that death would come easier to her, like a blessing, a saving grace to redeem her miserable life.

In any case she would die. There was no one to save her now.

No one but Savior.
